SALIS SUBTERRA
CHAPTER II
Chapter II is my most recent development of ‘Salis Subterra’. Focusing on the impact of salt mining, specifically examining how it affects the natural landscape. My images document the Sandbach Flashes, a collection of fourteen wetlands formed by subsidence. The images in this chapter document the damage caused by subsidence on the landscape, depicting sinking fencelines and fields. I aimed to create a harmonious balance within my work, capturing human influence on the landscape through black-and-white film. I immersed the film in the waters of the Sandbach Flashes, a process that allows the natural landscape to directly interact with the chemical processes of the film, distorting the images in a way that reflects the interplay betweem human activity and the landscape. As a result, grainy and distorted images highlight the transformation and fragile nature of both entities and how they are complexly entwined.
